In the summer of 2023, The Henry Ford welcomed internationally renowned artist Kelly O’Dell to spend a week in the Greenfield Village Glass Shop. Kelly brought her work of examining species extinction, conservation and human impact on the natural world to our Glass Shop. Here, she collaborated with our glassblowers to create objects demonstrating her unique approach to glassmaking. Hear from Kelly about her experience at Greenfield Village in this video interview.

This exhibition at the Pittsburgh Glass Center in 2018 by Seattle-area glass artist Kelly O’Dell explored existence and extinction, preservation and decay. Inspired by the changing of the seasons in the Pacific Northwest after growing up in the perpetual summer of the Hawaiian Islands, O’Dell’s work highlighted the devastating impact of the human race on species in the wild and embodied the Latin phrase “memento mori,” meaning “remember death.”

Chihuly in the hot shop, at the Tacoma MOG was a week-long glassblowing extravaganza. I had a ton of fun on one of those days assisting my amazing “boss” William Morris. It was a high energy, very hot, fast-paced event, with a lot of big names and cameras in the shop. Holy moly what a crazy day! We made Chihuly’s Macchias that day, on Tuesday. You can see Bill working (and me running circles around him) starting at 21:30 thru 27:00.
